Five People Shot to Death: Americans Breathe a Sigh of Relief

There are a number of reasons Americans can breathe a sigh of relief after the mass shooting at the Fort Lauderdale airport.

  1. The shooter was just a crazy Iraq war veteran and not some crazed Muslim terrorist.
  2. Only five people were killed, a very low body count by American standards
  3. The shooting took place at the baggage claim, meaning that no one community was affected. As a result, normal TV programming will not have to be interrupted by news conferences featuring mayors and clergymen singing the praises of the community’s strength in facing tragedy, the healing power of praying together, blah, blah. A so-called tragedy dispersed over several communities is not such a tearjerker and is less disruptive, especially at the end of a busy holiday season.
  4. Despite the shooter’s having gone to the FBI informing them that he was hearing voices telling him to do things, sometimes urging him to join ISIS, he was able to legally acquire a handgun and legally carry it in his checked baggage, which is how he managed to have the gun at the baggage claim. Clearly, Second Amendment rights are still intact.

It’s possible that President-Elect Trump will want to have the voices in the man’s head investigated for terrorist connections because of the ISIS bit. But all in all, this was not a bad way to begin the New Year.

  1. This is such a sad but true rue analysis of the situation. I thought know the biggest shock to me was to learn that people are able to carry registered guns in their checked baggage. How enlightened. Also chilling to me is that I was waiting for baggage in that same spot less than a month ago. What a world.
