Nancy Reagan RIP

TIME

As President, Ronald Reagan often relied on the advice of Nancy’s astrologer Joan Quigley. Reagan’s chief of staff Donald Regan wrote:

“Virtually every major move and decision the Reagans made during my time as White House Chief of Staff was cleared in advance with a woman in San Francisco [Quigley] who drew up horoscopes to make certain that the planets were in a favorable alignment for the enterprise.”

That puts the prospect of a President Donald Trump in perspective. If someone as scientifically illiterate as Reagan could be the leader of the free world, why not a narcissist who is obsessed with the size of his penis? When it comes to policy, it’s hard to imagine Trump outdoing Reagan’s war on the poor:

Reagan’s trickle-down voodooism arguably paved the way for Trump’s nationalist populism. Perhaps the astrologer nonsense paved the way for Republican denial of science in general. That’s something to think about before Nancy Reagan’s passing makes us nostalgic for a supposedly gentler, more rational GOP.

  1. I’ve seen politicians given far worse advice by people with what might be thought of as more valid credentials.
